Bob's Red Mill
This is a blend of three types of quinoa: white, red, and black. Each grain cooks to a slightly different texture, offering a pleasing contrast. The combination provides a visually appealing and flavorful base for many dishes.
Quinoa is a versatile grain that can be used in both savory and sweet preparations. It serves as an excellent alternative to rice or pasta.
To prepare, rinse the quinoa thoroughly under cold water to remove any saponins, which can impart a bitter taste. Combine one part quinoa with two parts liquid, such as water or broth, in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the quinoa is tender. Let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork. This method ensures fluffy, separate grains.
The tri-color blend offers a more complex visual appeal and a subtle variation in texture compared to single-color quinoa. White quinoa tends to be the mildest and fluffiest, while red and black quinoa hold their shape better and have a slightly nuttier flavor. The mix provides a balance of these characteristics.
Store any unused cooked quinoa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For uncooked quinoa, keep it in its original packaging or transfer to a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to maintain freshness.
