The Soyshop
This is a block of firm tofu, made from soybeans and water. It has a neutral flavor and a dense, solid texture. Tofu is a versatile ingredient that can absorb the flavors of marinades and sauces. The firm texture makes it suitable for a variety of cooking methods. It is a staple in many vegetarian and vegan diets.
Tofu can be prepared in many ways, from simple pan-frying to baking and incorporating into stews. Its ability to take on other flavors makes it adaptable to diverse cuisines.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press the tofu to remove excess water. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top. Once pressed, it can be cut into cubes, slices, or crumbles. Marinating tofu for at least 30 minutes will infuse it with flavor. It can then be pan-fried until golden brown, baked for a firmer texture, or added directly to simmering dishes.
This firm tofu has a higher water content than extra-firm varieties, making it slightly softer. It holds its shape well when cooked but may not achieve the same crispy exterior as extra-firm tofu without additional preparation.
Refrigerate any unused portion of this tofu. It should be stored submerged in water in an airtight container. Change the water daily to keep it fresh. It is best used within a few days of opening.
