This is a block of firm tofu, made from soybeans, water, and a coagulant. It has a neutral flavor and a dense, solid texture that holds its shape well during cooking. Tofu is a versatile ingredient often used as a plant-based alternative in various dishes.
Tofu can be prepared in many ways, absorbing flavors from marinades and sauces. Its firm texture makes it suitable for a wide range of cooking methods.
Before cooking, it is often pressed to remove excess water, which helps it achieve a crispier texture. This firm tofu can then be cut into cubes, triangles, or slabs. It readily absorbs marinades, so soaking it for at least 30 minutes before cooking is recommended. It can be pan-fried until golden brown, baked until firm, or added directly to stews and curries where it will soften and soak up the surrounding flavors. It can also be crumbled and used in place of ground meat in certain recipes.
Firm tofu has a higher water content than extra-firm varieties, making it slightly softer. However, it is denser and holds its shape better than silken or soft tofu, which are more delicate and better suited for blending into sauces or desserts.
Keep refrigerated. Once opened, drain any excess liquid and store the remaining tofu in an airtight container submerged in fresh water. Change the water daily and use within 2-3 days for best quality.
