Southern Style Chicken Fry Mix
What it is
This is a seasoned flour blend designed to create a crispy, flavorful coating for fried chicken. It typically contains a mix of all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and a variety of spices and herbs that are common in Southern cooking. The blend is formulated to adhere well to chicken pieces and to achieve a golden-brown, crunchy exterior when fried. It simplifies the process of preparing fried chicken by providing a pre-mixed seasoning base.
How people cook with it
This mix is ideal for anyone looking to achieve a classic fried chicken taste and texture at home. It can be used for various cuts of chicken.
- Coating chicken pieces before frying
- Seasoning fried fish
- Adding crunch to fried vegetables
- Flavoring fried pork chops
To use, place the chicken pieces in a bowl and moisten them slightly, perhaps with water or buttermilk. Then, put the fry mix into a shallow dish or a large resealable bag. Dredge each piece of chicken thoroughly in the mix, ensuring it is evenly coated on all sides. Press the coating firmly onto the chicken to help it adhere. The coated chicken is then ready to be fried in hot oil until golden brown and cooked through. Excess coating can be shaken off before frying.
How it differs from similar foods
Compared to plain flour, this mix offers a pre-selected blend of spices that contribute a distinct savory and sometimes peppery flavor profile. It often includes ingredients like paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder, which are not typically found in standard all-purpose flour, resulting in a more complex taste.
Who it is for
Home cooks who enjoy preparing classic Southern dishes will find this mix convenient.
How to keep the rest
After opening, store the remaining fry mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. This will help maintain its freshness and prevent clumping. Ensure the container is sealed tightly to keep out moisture and air, which can affect the texture and flavor over time.
