Salsa Style Diced Tomatoes
What it is
These are diced tomatoes that have been seasoned with a blend of spices commonly found in salsa. They are typically packed in tomato juice or puree. The tomatoes are usually firm and hold their shape well, making them suitable for various culinary applications. This product offers a convenient way to add tomato flavor and a hint of spice to dishes without needing to chop fresh tomatoes or prepare a salsa from scratch. They are a pantry staple for many home cooks.
How people cook with it
These tomatoes are a versatile ingredient that can be used in many different dishes. They add flavor and texture to both hot and cold preparations.
- Added to chili
- Mixed into pasta sauce
- Topped on tacos
- Used in dips
You can use these salsa style diced tomatoes straight from the can in many recipes. For dishes like chili or stews, simply add the entire can, including the liquid, to your pot during the cooking process. They can also be drained and added to salads or used as a topping for baked potatoes or nachos. When making a quick pasta sauce, sauté some onions and garlic, then stir in the diced tomatoes and simmer until slightly thickened. They are also excellent stirred into scrambled eggs or omelets for a flavorful breakfast.
How it differs from similar foods
Unlike regular diced tomatoes, these have added seasonings that mimic the flavor profile of salsa, including spices like cumin and chili powder. This means they bring a pre-made flavor complexity that plain diced tomatoes do not. They are also generally less watery than some other canned tomato products.
Who it is for
Home cooks looking for convenient ways to add tomato flavor and a touch of spice to their meals will find these useful.
How to keep the rest
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place like a pantry. Once opened, transfer any unused portion to a separate airtight container and refrigerate. It is best to use refrigerated leftovers within a few days for optimal freshness and flavor.
