Harmons Penne is a type of dry pasta shaped like short tubes with angled ends. This shape is created by extruding semolina flour and water through a die. The ridges on some penne, known as penne rigate, help to hold sauces better than smooth penne, called penne lisce. It is a staple ingredient in many kitchens, offering a versatile base for a wide range of dishes.
Penne is commonly used in baked dishes and with hearty sauces. Its shape makes it ideal for capturing chunky ingredients.
To cook penne, bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne and stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook according to package directions until al dente, which means it is tender but still has a slight bite. Drain the pasta well, reserving some of the cooking water. Toss the drained penne with your chosen sauce, adding a little reserved pasta water if needed to achieve the desired consistency. It can also be added directly to baked casseroles.
Compared to spaghetti or fettuccine, penne's tubular shape and often ridged surface allow it to hold thicker, chunkier sauces more effectively. Its shorter length also makes it easier to eat with a fork, especially in dishes with many ingredients.
Home cooks preparing everyday meals and entertaining guests often choose penne.
Store any leftover uncooked penne in its original packaging or an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Ensure it is sealed to prevent moisture absorption and keep it fresh for future use.
