Franklin FARMS
This is a block of firm tofu made from organic soybeans. This firm variety has a denser texture compared to silken or soft tofu, making it suitable for a variety of cooking methods where it needs to hold its shape. It is a versatile ingredient that can absorb flavors well.
Firm tofu is a popular ingredient in many cuisines. It can be prepared in numerous ways, from simple pan-frying to incorporating it into heartier dishes.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press the tofu to remove excess water. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping the block in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes. Once pressed, the tofu can be cut into cubes, slices, or crumbles. It readily absorbs marinades, so consider soaking it in your favorite flavors before cooking. Pan-frying, baking, or stir-frying are common methods to achieve a pleasant texture, often with a crispy exterior.
Compared to soft or silken tofu, pressed firm tofu has a much lower water content and a more cohesive structure. This makes it ideal for dishes where you want the tofu to maintain its shape and not break apart easily during cooking, unlike its more delicate counterparts.
After opening, store any unused portion of the tofu in an airtight container submerged in water in the refrigerator. Change the water daily to keep it fresh. It is best to consume the opened tofu within a few days for optimal quality.
