This is a block of firm tofu made from organic soybeans. It is made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into a solid block. This firm variety holds its shape well when cooked, making it versatile for various culinary applications. It has a mild flavor that readily absorbs the tastes of other ingredients.
Tofu is a staple in many cuisines, particularly in Asian cooking. It can be prepared in numerous ways, from simple pan-frying to incorporating it into stews and stir-fries.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press the tofu to remove excess water. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping the block in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes. Once pressed, the tofu can be cut into desired shapes. For a crispy texture, pan-fry it in oil until golden brown on all sides. It can also be baked, stir-fried with vegetables, or added to curries and noodle dishes. Marinating tofu before cooking allows it to absorb flavors more deeply.
Firm tofu is denser and holds its shape better than silken or soft tofu. This makes it ideal for dishes where you want distinct pieces of tofu that do not crumble apart. Silken tofu, in contrast, is much softer and is better suited for blending into sauces, smoothies, or desserts.
Refrigerate any unused portion of the tofu. It is best to store it submerged in water in an airtight container. Change the water daily. Properly stored, it can last for several days in the refrigerator.
