Simple Truth Organic No Salt Added Crushed Tomato
What it is
This is a can of crushed tomatoes produced by Simple Truth Organic. The tomatoes are grown organically and have no salt added during processing. Crushed tomatoes have a texture that is smoother than diced tomatoes but still retains some small pieces of tomato. This makes them versatile for various cooking applications where a smooth yet slightly textured tomato base is desired. The absence of added salt allows for greater control over the final seasoning of your dishes.
How people cook with it
Crushed tomatoes are a fundamental ingredient in many savory dishes. They form the base for sauces, soups, and stews.
- Sauce base
- Soup starter
- Stew thickener
- Casserole layer
Open the can and add the crushed tomatoes directly to your cooking pot. They can be simmered with aromatics like onions and garlic, or combined with other liquids and ingredients to create a rich sauce. For a quick pasta sauce, heat them with herbs and spices. They also work well in chili, marinara, or as a component in baked dishes like lasagna. The no-salt-added nature means you can adjust the saltiness to your personal preference, making it suitable for various dietary needs or simply for more precise flavor building.
How it differs from similar foods
Unlike whole peeled tomatoes, crushed tomatoes are pre-processed for a softer texture. Compared to tomato puree, crushed tomatoes typically have more distinct tomato pieces, offering a slightly chunkier consistency. The 'no salt added' feature distinguishes it from standard crushed tomatoes that often contain added sodium for preservation and flavor enhancement.
Who it is for
Home cooks who enjoy making sauces from scratch will appreciate this ingredient.
How to keep the rest
After opening, transfer any unused crushed tomatoes to a clean, airtight container. Refrigerate this container promptly. It is best to consume the remaining product within a few days to maintain its freshness and quality. Avoid storing leftover tomatoes in the opened can.
