Golden Flaxseed Meal
What it is
This is finely ground golden flaxseed, a versatile ingredient derived from the flax plant. It is a plant-based food product that offers a mild, nutty flavor and a slightly gritty texture. The meal is made from whole golden flaxseeds that have been milled to a consistent powder. This process makes the nutrients within the seeds more accessible for the body. It is a popular choice for those seeking to incorporate more plant-based ingredients into their diet.
How people cook with it
Golden flaxseed meal is often used as a binder or thickener in various culinary applications. Its fine texture allows it to blend seamlessly into many recipes.
- Baked goods binder
- Smoothie thickener
- Oatmeal topper
- Vegan egg substitute
To use golden flaxseed meal as a binder, mix one tablespoon of the meal with three tablespoons of water and let it sit for a few minutes until it forms a gel-like consistency. This mixture can then be used in place of eggs in many baking recipes, such as muffins, cookies, and quick breads. It can also be stirred into oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies to add a subtle nutty flavor and a boost of plant-based goodness. For a simple topping, sprinkle it over salads or roasted vegetables.
How it differs from similar foods
Golden flaxseed meal differs from whole flaxseeds in its texture and how easily the body can absorb its nutrients. The grinding process breaks down the seed's tough outer shell, making its beneficial components more readily available. It also has a lighter color and a milder flavor compared to brown flaxseed meal.
Who it is for
Home cooks and bakers looking for plant-based ingredients often choose golden flaxseed meal.
How to keep the rest
To maintain freshness, store the remaining golden flaxseed meal in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration is recommended to prolong its shelf life and prevent it from becoming rancid. Ensure the container is sealed tightly after each use to keep out moisture and air.
