This is a block of firm tofu, a versatile soy-based product made from coagulated soy milk. It has a dense texture and holds its shape well, making it suitable for a variety of cooking methods. Tofu is a staple in many cuisines, particularly in Asia, and is appreciated for its neutral flavor that readily absorbs other tastes. This particular variety is pressed to remove excess water, resulting in a firmer consistency compared to silken or soft tofu.
It can be prepared in numerous ways, from simple pan-frying to more complex dishes.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press the firm tofu to remove as much water as possible. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping the block in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes. Once pressed, the tofu can be cut into desired shapes, such as cubes, slices, or triangles. It can then be marinated to impart flavor before being pan-fried until golden brown, baked, grilled, or added directly to dishes like soups and stews. Its firm texture makes it ideal for absorbing sauces and spices.
Firm tofu differs from silken or soft tofu by its higher density and lower water content. This makes it less likely to crumble during cooking and better suited for applications where the tofu needs to maintain its structure, such as stir-fries or grilling, unlike softer varieties which are often blended into sauces or used in desserts.
After opening, store any unused portion of the firm tofu in an airtight container submerged in water in the refrigerator. Change the water daily. It is best to consume the remaining tofu within 3 to 5 days for optimal freshness and quality.
