Nature’s Tofu
This is a block of firm tofu, a soy-based food product made from pressed soybeans. It has a dense texture and holds its shape well, making it suitable for a variety of cooking methods. Firm tofu is a versatile ingredient that can absorb flavors from marinades and sauces. It is a common staple in many plant-based diets.
Its ability to hold its shape makes it ideal for dishes where you want distinct pieces of tofu.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press firm tofu to remove excess water. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top. Once pressed, it can be cut into cubes, slices, or crumbles. Marinating tofu before cooking allows it to absorb flavors. It can then be pan-fried until golden brown and crispy, baked until firm, or added directly to stews and stir-fries.
Firm tofu has a higher water content than extra-firm tofu, making it slightly softer. However, it is much firmer than silken or soft tofu, which are best suited for purees and creamy dishes. Its density allows it to be handled and cooked without falling apart.
After opening, store any unused portion of the firm tofu in an airtight container submerged in water in the refrigerator. Change the water daily to keep it fresh. It is best to consume the remaining tofu within 3 to 5 days.
