This is a block of firm tofu, a versatile soy-based food product. It is made from soybeans, water, and a coagulant. The firm texture means it holds its shape well during cooking, making it suitable for a variety of culinary applications. It is a popular ingredient in many cuisines, particularly Asian cooking.
It can be prepared in numerous ways, absorbing flavors readily.
Before cooking, it is often beneficial to press firm tofu to remove excess water. This can be done using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes. Once pressed, it can be cut into cubes, slices, or crumbles. Marinating tofu allows it to absorb flavors, and it can then be pan-fried, baked, grilled, or added directly to dishes like soups and stews. Its ability to take on different textures, from chewy to crispy, makes it adaptable.
Firm tofu differs from silken or soft tofu by its denser texture and lower water content. This makes it more suitable for cooking methods where the tofu needs to maintain its structure, unlike silken tofu which is best for blending into sauces or desserts.
After opening, store any unused firm tofu in an airtight container submerged in water in the refrigerator. Change the water daily. It is best to use the remaining tofu within 3 to 5 days for optimal freshness and quality.
