Earthbound Farm Baby Red Butter Lettuce
What it is
This is a package of tender, young red butter lettuce leaves. The leaves are small and have a delicate texture. They are often described as having a slightly sweet flavor. The red coloration comes from anthocyanins, which are natural plant pigments. This variety is typically harvested at a young stage for its soft mouthfeel and mild taste, making it a versatile addition to many dishes.
How people cook with it
Baby red butter lettuce is perfect for adding fresh greens to meals. Its delicate nature makes it suitable for both raw preparations and light cooking.
- Salad base
- Lettuce wraps
- Garnish
- Lightly wilted side
To prepare, gently rinse the lettuce leaves under cool water and pat them dry with a clean towel or use a salad spinner. The leaves are delicate and can tear easily, so handle them with care. They are excellent as a base for salads, where their mild flavor complements a variety of dressings and other ingredients. You can also use them to create elegant lettuce wraps, filling them with your favorite proteins and vegetables. For a slightly different texture, the leaves can be very briefly sautéed or wilted in a warm pan with a touch of butter or olive oil.
How it differs from similar foods
Compared to more robust lettuces like romaine or iceberg, baby red butter lettuce is much softer and has a more delicate, almost buttery texture. Its flavor is also milder and slightly sweeter. The red hue provides a visual contrast that can enhance the presentation of dishes, setting it apart from green varieties.
Who it is for
Home cooks looking for a mild and tender lettuce for salads and lighter preparations will appreciate this product.
How to keep the rest
To keep the remaining lettuce fresh, ensure the bag is sealed tightly to prevent moisture loss. Store it in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. It is best consumed within a few days of opening to enjoy its peak freshness and texture. Avoid washing until you are ready to use it.
