Idahoan Buttery Homestyle Mashed Potatoes
What it is
This is a dehydrated potato product designed for quick and easy preparation. It comes in a pouch containing flakes of potato that rehydrate with hot water and butter or milk. The homestyle cut means the potato pieces are slightly larger and less uniform than some other instant mashed potato products, offering a texture that aims to mimic homemade mashed potatoes. It is intended to be a convenient side dish option for busy households.
How people cook with it
These mashed potatoes are a versatile side dish that can accompany many meals. They are simple to prepare, making them a go-to for weeknight dinners.
- Quick side for weeknight meals
- Comfort food staple
- Base for shepherd's pie
- Party side dish
To prepare, you typically need to boil water and then stir in the potato flakes. The amount of water and the stirring process are important for achieving the desired consistency. Some people prefer to add milk or butter for extra richness and flavor, which is often suggested on the packaging. The flakes absorb the liquid, transforming into a creamy mashed potato dish in just a few minutes. It is important to stir thoroughly to avoid lumps and ensure even rehydration of all the potato pieces.
How it differs from similar foods
Compared to other instant mashed potatoes, the 'homestyle' cut of these flakes tends to provide a slightly heartier texture. Some instant varieties can be very fine and smooth, whereas this product aims for a more rustic, less processed feel, closer to potatoes mashed from scratch.
Who it is for
Busy home cooks looking for a fast and satisfying side dish will find this product useful.
How to keep the rest
After opening the pouch, it is best to store any unused portion in an airtight container or resealable bag. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. This helps to maintain the freshness and prevent the potato flakes from absorbing odors or becoming stale.
