Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic: are vegetables that belong to the allium genus, and they have both been used in mainstreams and popular medicine for more than 4,000 years.

The following are diseases that have previously treated with both onions and garlic: asthma, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chicken pox, cold, diabetes, malaria tumors and heart problems.

Modern science has demonstrated that allium vegetables and their components have different therapeutic effects including protective effects against platelet aggregation, fibrinolysis activity, anticancer, antimicrobial anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects.

It has been demonstrated that several allium genus species have a significant anticancer activity, garlic being the most effective one. This effect is attributed to the interaction between the garlic´s sulfur compounds and the tumor cells metabolism.  Not only ingested, but also topical application of garlic oil has been demonstrated to substantially reduce skin cancers in mice.

At least two studies have shown that the consumption of garlic and onions is inversely proportional to the incidence of stomach cancer; this means the more garlic and onion you consume, less risk of having stomach cancer there is.

Garlic and onions also have cardio protective effects, this happens due to their antiplatelet activity, thromboxane biosynthesis, fibrinolytic activity, effects on lipid content in the blood and tissues. These effects may also include the reduction of sugar content in the blood and a beneficial effect on diabetes.

Benefits of crushing garlic:

  • Garlic contains Allicin (an antioxidant) which may prevent a heart attack, but it is ONLY formed when the garlic is crushed.
  • When you consume crushed garlic it immediately lowers your blood pressure, the UAB researchers found that this directly caused blood vessels relaxation up to 72%.
  • Studies have shown that participants consuming garlic were almost two-thirds less likely to catch a cold.
